How to Repair Roof Leakage?

If your roof leaks in heavy rain, be sure to have all the safety equipment you need – such as an umbrella raincoat and safety ladder – so that you can safely fix it.

Examine the attic, crawl space and any other areas with a light source. Look out for any signs of leakage like water stains.

Find the Leak

It is not always the location of the leakage that you see on your ceiling. This is because water can travel through walls and roofs to reach ceiling. In order to accurately pinpoint the location.

Use a light source to examine the underside the roof and insulation. Look out for dampness like damp spots, discolorations or rotted timber. You can also look for black mold.

If your leak cannot be found during a normal daytime inspection, you may need to seek assistance. One person should remain in the room near the stain on the ceiling while the other person outside sprays sections of the roof using a garden water hose. This will allow you to see the interior ceiling drip through the hole. Mark it using a nail when you find it!

Puncture Bulge

Puncturing a bulge in the ceiling that is collecting water may seem counterintuitive. But it will allow excess liquids to drain away, relieving pressure on the other parts of the roof. Otherwise, too much liquid could accumulate and cause it to collapse.

Before punching the hole with a drill, place a bucket underneath your workstation. This will catch any water leaking out. Next, use a hammer to locate and puncture the center using a hammer. Be careful when handling hot, leaking water. This can cut electrical wiring. After punching a hole, cover the area up to the roof ridge with a tarp. If needed, move furniture and protect it all.

Make a Temporary Embroidery Patch

If you can gain access to your attic space or crawlspace, placing a bucket or another container under the pooling of water could be a quick fix. This should prevent the water from seeping down walls further and damaging them.

A simple piece of tarp will also work as a roof repair solution. Cut a piece large enough to cover your roof, leaving at minimum an inch of stability on each side. Use galvanized nail or staples to secure it, and seal the perimeter with roofing sealant.

If you have missing shingles then you must devise an immediate temporary fix. To do this you will need two by fours (or similar) and some roofing glue from any home improvements or hardware store. You can also get plywood sheets and extra shingles at home depot to add stability. These simple repairs will buy time before a professional is able to complete the permanent repair.

Move What You Can

If your ceiling has a bulge, water could be collecting in that area and causing problems in your home. To protect your furniture, carpeting, and clothing from further ruination or exposure to mildew-like odor, relocate as much as you can. Place buckets and garbage bins nearby to reduce the damage caused by leakage. It is best to use a tarp to cover the entire area, from the problem spot to the roof peak. That way you can stop further leaks while you fix it.

If you have a roof with a vent-stack, look for signs that it is worn, such as rust or exposed nail heads. These can cause roof leakage.
